hillsdale, norfolk. they seem to be getting a handle on the fire. it is an important row -- location. a news crew is headed that way. we will bring a live report as soon as they arrive. also happening today, san francisco minimum wage going up to $12.25 an hour. joining oakland with the highest minimum wage in the area. it is part of an initiative to increase it to 15 bucks in 2018. seattle has highest minimum wage at $15 an hour. 6:02. the united nations humanitarian chief is in nepal after earthquake hit the region. more than 133,000 homes have been destroyed. the death toll stands at more than 6,000.

new video into the newsroom shows the devastation in nepal from a new angle. this is go provideo taken in katmandu. soldiers taking part in rescue efforts strapped it to a search dog. the soldier and dog part of a group of israeli defense forces sent to help. san francisco sent drones to help earthquake relief. sky catch plans to provide mapping images to assess damage and allocate resources to help. two researchers have been sent to katmandu. they're mappings mapping high priority areas. in that time more than a half million people donated and raised more than $10 million in funds for the international medical corp. so many people want to support

relief and recovery efforts in nepal. text nepal to 90999, contribute $10 or call 1-800-red cross. 6:04. protesters around the country and here in the bay area getting ready to rally for may day. if headed out the door, could mean delays for the commute. reporter amy hollyfield is live in oakland with more. >> reporter: the protesters are not here eric. they were scheduled to be here at 5:30 at telegraph and broadway in oakland. you see behind me it is empty. who did show up, can you see there parked across the street some chp officers. they had word this would happen. they're on stand by. looks like protesters are not early risers. we have an empty plaza here. look at the plan of events for today. you can sketch out your day. they were supposed to start at 5:30.

that has not happened. but at 7:30 is the next event, that's scheduled to be at mcarthur park they want to block google buses that take off to protest identification of oakland. 9:00, a presence at port of oakland. noon at city hall in oakland for a big rally. then in the evening set to be back here at telegraph and broadway at 7:00 for a big march. we have video of what the protest looked like last year. organizers say this is to call attention to labor workers, immigrants, they say the working class is under attack in this country. there's a call to shut it down. we did ask one person who did show up at 5:45 what shut it down looks like. >> shut it down means that people should go and march and

stop business as usual. it is only when you stop business as usual that people start paying attention to social issues. >> reporter: again he was the only one to show up this morning, and he has since left he has given up on this action happening here. the protesters have posted on social media that they want focus today to be on the black lives matter issue and police brutality issues happening around the country. it is expected to be a long day of protest. the midday protest expected to be the big rally. so far this is off to a very quiet start. live in oakland, amy hollyfield abc 7 news. 6:06. major financial backers of the warriors arena say they've never heard of an opposition group that spoke before a community meeting. they say the nonprofit group mission bay alliance is spreading untruths to the public.

members of the alliance told community members last night that the proposed arena will cause massive traffic headaches and possibly block ambulances from mission bay medical center. an alliance spokesman says the group is composed of ucf stakeholders, many who contributed $250 million to the university and hospital, says he doesn't believe that. what's dubbed the fight of the century puts all vegas. our reporter is live in the newsroom with more. >> the count down is on. the fight has been years in the making. here's a live look at the vegas strip. it happens at the floyd mayweather and manny pacquiao hit the ring for

boycotting it because mayweather was charged several times on domestic violence violations. melissa harrington, abc 7 news. >> the money in this single fight could rake in in one day a staggering around of money. the biggest one day sporting event was last year's super bowl with $500 million, according to "time." if this event brings in close to 400 million expected, it will make it number two pushing the summer olympics in 2012 to number three and remember this fight could be over in just seconds. >> floyd mayweather may have plans for part of his purse. if he wins the attorney for night confirms he will pay his bail. he was ariend for murder of a man he ran down with his car. knight pled not guilty to the

we have video of a 911 call. >> he is driving away. >> which way is he driving? >> he is driving -- all the kids on the bus are crying. crazy guy. >> wow. this happened on tuesday. district officials say the driver told them he stopped the bus before the designated stop because children on board were being too loud and talking. he turned around, took them back to school. the kids were actually all safe. dozens of police departments are getting help beefing up the force. new this morning department of justice has launched a $20 million pilot program to expand use of body cameras. most of the money funded to small police agencies that may not be able to afford cameras on their own. doj is responding to what it calls immediate need on the heels of violent protests in ferguson, missouri and recently in baltimore. the announcement comes the same

week that san francisco's mayor said he wants to spend more than $6 million to equip every patrol officer in the city with a body camera. a sea lion getting help at the marine mammal center this morning after found hiding under a car in san francisco. the sea lion rubbish was found he was picked up before and treated for malnutrition. he lost 21 pounds since then. warmer water is pushing the food supply north, the mammal center says they've taken in a record number of sea lions this >> the waters continue to warm. if he knew the name was rubbish,

clouds and cooler weather. this is the way it plays out. light and variable winds this morning. by noon, you see clouds coming up from the south and coming down from the north. they're going to meet in the golden gate and punch through as we head into the evening and overnight hours. it will be dramatically different this evening than last evening around most neighborhoods. during the afternoon hours, we hit mid to upper 80s in the south bay. cooler in santa cruz. falling into the 60s this afternoon. low to mid-80s, redwood city. mid to upper 70s in san mateo. 70s at the coast before the clouds drop us into the mid-60s this afternoon. could hit mid 70s downtown before the same thing happens, cools us into the low 70s. heading to north bay san raf avenue mid to upper mid-60s at your beaches.

way. look at the san mateo bridge 13 minutes between heyward, foster city. check it out. it is moving at top speeds. eastbound direction as well. we have two lanes taken away. as i move over to the north bay 101, again, clear drive. seeing very light conditions friday light conditions. i was saying i think everyone went to vegas for the mayweather pacquiao fight. safe travels, everyone. 6:31. following breaking news in san mateo, firefighters are working a three alarm fire at an apartment complex. matt keller is live at the scene with more. >> reporter: the fact that the fire wasn't more tragic or disastrous is credit to firefighters that arrived quickly on scene. first call came at 5:13. five minutes later first crews were here fighting the fire at this apartment complex. seven units in this complex.

they were able to knock that fire keep that fire into one unit. firefighters told me there was a man and woman and their adult daughter and her granddaughter, a six-year-old, inside the apartment when this started. they're crediting the smoke detector with getting out alive. able to escape without injury. as they were going out they noticed a fire in the kitchen area. firefighters called a second alarm, staged a third alarm, although they didn't need to use the firefighters. the first firefighters on scene from the first and second alarm were able to get this fire out. there were 37 firefighters on the scene, 8 engines, 2 trucks 10 vehicles to put out the fire. apartments are all close together. this is a seven unit complex in the middle of the apartment complex, so obviously the danger of flames spreading was very real to the firefighters and occupants living in the building. i am told no other apartments are damaged and all the people will be allowed to go back into

their homes sometime today but as far as four people that were in the apartment complex that burned, they're not going to be allowed back in. obviously their apartment is destroyed. we are told that the red cross is going to be here on scene, whether or not they're going to help out the family or not we still don't know that yet whether or not they have family or friends to stay in the area. this area is blocked off. a lot of engines and trucks blocking the area. police have it blocked off. avoid that area if possible. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> of course that area is not far from a busy intersection hillsdale and norfolk. thanks for that information. 6:33. happening now, bay area bracing for may day protests. rallies could impact your morning commute. amy hollyfield is live in oakland with a look at what's happening. amy? >> reporter: kristin, it is off to a slow start. protesters were supposed to be

here at telegraph and broadway at 5:30. look behind me, no protesters. police got the memo. chp was called in by oakland police as backup. you can see about a half dozen officers standing here just in case, ready to respond to react. this is where the first protest was scheduled to start. so far protesters are a no show. here's the schedule of what the day will look like. they were going to be here at 5:30. the next event is set for 7:30 at macarthur park where they want to block google they're set to go to port of oakland. noon a big rally for oakland city hall, and in the evening, a maran rally at lathem here's video of last year's protest. organizers say it is to call attention to labor workers and immigrants. they say the working class is

as of now, this is off to a very quiet start. live in oakland amy abc 7 news. international long share union plans may lead the march that starts at 9:00 a.m. port of oakland scheduled a closure for eight hours. union leadership is angry over social injustice specifically the police shooting death of walter scott unarmed man shot in a traffic stop. may day protests in other cities. in san francisco at civic center plaza followed by march to 24th and mission at 3:30. in san jose, a 2:00 p.m. rally at target plaza at story and king road, followed by march and rally at city hall.

also held in other cities like chicago, philadelphia new york. atlanta authorities say they were forced to shoot a woman that slipped out of handcuffs grabbed a gun and began shooting at them. the woman was arrested for driving a vehicle reported stolen. it is unclear if officers searched her for weapons before putting her in back of a squad car. a witness says she was handcuffed and apparently managed to draw a gun. she was taken to a hospital where she died. officers were not injured. 6:37. the latest on the nepal. a young woman was rescued from rubble near the main bus terminal today. here is new video taken this morning of debris in the area. police say hours before the woman's rescue, a 15-year-old boy was pulled from wreckage of a seven story building. more than 6,000 people died from

higher. apple yesterday sold off, and hitting an all-time high earlier after the earnings report. apple was the worst performing stock in the dow yesterday. it lost $43 billion in market value since monday. investors nervous about how a company the size of apple can keep growing. raising a child has never been cheap. new report from young invincible says parenting is more daunting for millenials than for their parents or grandparents. many with stagnant or falling wages, student loan debt, rising child care cost. wendy's on the organic band wagon with honest tea. should go to school. many school districts ban them from class until the child is treated. the american academy of pediatrics is encouraging schools to change that policy. they say although lice makes the head itch, the bugs are not a health hazard since they don't spread diseases. >> can cost $500 to treat. families may want to think about that. don't be surprised if traffic signs on interstate 80 look different the next few weeks. new electronic display boards are being tested for the smart corridor project on 80. the new signs give drivers more advance notice of traffic conditions. transit leaders say boards change where there's an issue warning drivers of blocked rains or reduced speeds. signs are expected to go live later this year. 6:48. time for a check of traffic. we had a couple of busy traffic days, this ain't one of them. >> that's right. today is such a nice day to end

the week. we traveled 84 we came away, am going to turn here, traffic there is smooth. there's a pocket of slowing south, and heading farther toward 680. look at the map and other parts of the bay area. that's a wide picture of the bay area. seeing slowing on 30 miles per hour leaving tulley road. and northbound side of 280 and drive time traffic. 580 westbound, 26 minutes. 21 minutes highway 4, clear in the north bay. how is the weather? roller coaster we talked about, this is the quickest turnaround i have seen in eight years. look at the cameras the heat surged. 24 degrees warmer than the day before. and now everybody is dropping.

some areas dramatically, up to 17 degrees in petaluma. let's look at what's going on. light and variable winds on the doppler. a hazy start with temperatures in the 60s this morning. a lot of people had trouble sleeping. tonight cooler better sleeping after hot highs continue inland. cooler conditions hit the coast. clouds and highs coming to all neighborhoods for the weekend. high pressure is rolling away, clockwise flow. thick fog around santa barbara. that will come up the coast through the morning and afternoon. watch the winds go from light and variable to there, on shore at noon. look at the clouds developing on the coast into the afternoon and evening. everybody will be touched by sea breeze overnight and into tomorrow. until then mid to upper 80s in the south bay.
